Partner PWD, environment, cooperative sectors take stage at TALAB 2025

From listening to the lived experiences of members from Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc (TWHI) to joining the conversations on sustainability by Ms Melody Asia of Philippine Misereor Partnership, Inc (PMPI), several sectors joined this year’s Talakayang Alay sa Bayan (TALAB) 2025. A number of the speakers were invited by and are partners of the Office for Social Concern and Involvement (OSCI) and the OSCI Student Volunteers.
A summary of the talks by OSCI are as follows:
Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc (PJPS) & Ex-presso. The talk focused on the experiences of persons restored of liberty (PRL) and the coffee shop put together. (TWHI)’s Inclusive Spaces: Ensuring Dignity in Mobility focused on navigating mobility in public walking spaces. It was organized by OSCI formators Sai Petallo and Steph Roxas. Photo ℅ Xavi Sazon.Santuario Deaf Ministry’s Usap-Kamay, Kinig-Mata: Encountering the Deaf Through Stories & Learning Sign Language was a 4-hour session to learn from the struggles and narratives of the deaf members in our society and an opportunity to learn sign language. Boccia Pilipinas’ Boccia! Empowerment and Inclusion through Sport was a workshop on a target sport initially designed for people with cerebral palsy but now played by people who have neurological impairments that can affect their motor function. The workshop gave students a chance to learn the rules, play the game, and hear firsthand how Boccia sport can be a space of empowerment and inclusion. Community Crafts Association of the Philippines (CCAP)’s Crafting Wonders, Weaving Communities was an interactive workshop with the artisan organization. They guided participants through various crafting techniques to create certain products, sharing their stories and style, weaved into the conversation. It also included discussions on fair trade concepts and their experiences as we see firsthand how ethical production can uplift various artisan communities across the nation. Masungi Georeserve’s Guardians of the Land was a talk given by Tristan Montemor (Discovery Trail Head) and Nilbert Marquez (Member of the Dumagat Tribe from General Nakar, Quezon Province, Legacy Trail Head and Masungi forest ranger). Both shared their work, mission, real experiences and the challenges that Masungi continues to face. The talk was co-organized by the Development Society of the Ateneo (DevSoc) and OSCI formator Serge Gabriel. Photo ℅ Xavi Sazon.
The final TALAB talk was held on October 28 in partnership with Bahay Tuluyan. The dialogue brought together Children in Street Situations (CiSS) representatives from across the country and national and local government officials for an open exchange of perspectives and commitments to uphold, protect, and fulfill the rights of CiSS. It was followed by a tour in the Ateneo Art Gallery. The talk was organized by OSCI formator Floy Soriano.
