Cebu Landmasters Inc. turns over major donation to Ateneo; BEG driveway named “Cebu Landmasters Drive”
27 Nov 2025
Ateneo de Manila University formally received a significant donation from Cebu Landmasters Inc (CLI) to support ongoing enhancements to the Blue Eagle Gym (BEG), one of the University’s most historic and iconic athletic facilities. The donation was made official through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing and turnover ceremony at Xavier Hall last 12 November 2025.
Representing Ateneo was University President Fr Roberto Yap SJ, who accepted the donation on behalf of the University. Leading the CLI delegation was Jose “Joe” Soberano III, Founder, President, and CEO of Cebu Landmasters Inc, and a proud Ateneo alumnus from College Class of 1976.
He was joined by his sons, their spouses, and a key member of the CLI leadership team—all of whom are alumni of the Ateneo.
- Jose Franco Soberano, SEVP & COO – College 2007
- Alana May Soberano, spouse of Franco – College 2007
- Jose Gabriel Soberano, SBU Head for Visayas – College 2018
- Bianca Rodriguez Soberano, spouse of Gabriel – College 2017
- Eric Gregor Tan, SBU Head for Luzon – College 2006
Through CLI’s generosity, the driveway leading to the Blue Eagle Gym will now be known as the Cebu Landmasters Drive. The naming both honors the company’s support and underscores the shared commitment of Ateneo and CLI to nation-building, youth development, and the advancement of sports excellence.
Strengthening Shared Commitments
In his message of gratitude, Yap acknowledged CLI’s long-standing relationship with the University. “The Soberano family and Cebu Landmasters embody what it means to remain deeply rooted in one’s Ateneo formation. Their support strengthens our ability to provide spaces where future Ateneans -- students, athletes, leaders -- can grow, learn, and serve.”
Soberano, in turn, reflected on the family’s enduring ties to Ateneo. “Ateneo shaped who we are, not only as professionals, but as people committed to service. Supporting the Blue Eagle Gym is our way of giving back to the community that formed us.”
A Partnership for the Future
The establishment of the Cebu Landmasters Drive signifies both a symbolic and functional enhancement to the Blue Eagle Gym complex, which now stands ready to serve thousands of students, athletes, alumni, guests, and partners. The BEG continues to play a critical role as a central venue for sports, formation, and major community events—including national and international competitions.
A remarkable detail highlights the strength of the family’s bond with Ateneo: Soberano, his two sons, and their spouses were all student-athletes during their years in the University, underscoring a legacy of discipline, teamwork, and excellence that continues into their professional and civic engagements.
Ateneo de Manila University gratefully acknowledges Cebu Landmasters Inc. for its meaningful contribution and for strengthening the shared mission of forming leaders for the country and the region.
