Ateneo de Manila partners with Jin Navitas Electric Corporation to achieve goal of drawing 100% of power from renewables — 5 years ahead of target
01 Dec 2025
Ateneo de Manila University has taken a historic step toward achieving its sustainable development goals with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Jin Navitas Electric Corporation (JNEC) to supply renewable energy to its Pasig Campus, Salcedo Village Campus, and the Blue Eagle Gym (BEG). This latest agreement, combined with contracts earlier signed with other energy providers, has enabled the University to achieve its target of using only renewable energy in all of its campuses, five years ahead of its 2030 deadline.
The MOA signing was held on 28 November 2025 at the Joy-Nostalg Hotel in Ortigas, home of JNEC and its parent organization, the Joy-Nostalg Group.
According to Mr Jose Alfonso Miras, President and CEO of JNEC:
“Through this partnership, Ateneo becomes the first client of JNEC under the government’s Retail Aggregation Program, a mechanism that allows multiple facilities of a single institution to procure renewable energy collectively, efficiently, and at scale.”
The renewable energy to be supplied to Ateneo will be sourced from the NING*NING Solar Rooftop Project in Naic, Cavite, a major installation of the Solaris Energy Group. This marks one of the most significant sustainability milestones in the University’s history.
A major step in Ateneo’s Laudato Si’ journey
Representing Ateneo de Manila were University President Fr Roberto C "Bobby" Yap SJ, and Vice President for Administration Mr Rodolfo P "Rudy" Ang, who both emphasized the significance of this milestone in the University’s commitment to integral ecology.
Speaking on behalf of the administration, VP Rudy highlighted what this achievement means for Ateneo’s strategic sustainability direction:
“A move towards 100% reliance on renewable energy across the entire University— five years ahead of our target— is a transformative step and a clear manifestation of our commitment to Laudato Si’. This partnership demonstrates how collaboration, innovation, and shared purpose can accelerate meaningful change.”
Fr Bobby Yap SJ underscored the deeper ethos behind the initiative, drawing from Catholic social teaching:
“At Ateneo, we recognize that adopting sustainable practices is not merely a choice but a commitment to the enduring well-being of our environment, our community, and our values. Each step we take shows the power of collaboration. As Laudato Si’ reminds us, everything is interconnected.”
A partnership powered by shared advocacy
Representing Jin Navitas Electric Corporation (JNEC) at the signing were Mr Jacinto “Jack” Ng Jr, Group Executive Officer of the Joy-Nostalg Group, and Mr Jose Alfonso Miras, President and CEO of JNEC.
Mr. Ng expressed the company’s pride in supporting an institution like Ateneo in a groundbreaking clean energy transformation:
“We are proud to provide energy that is not only clean and affordable, but also deeply meaningful—renewable energy that uplifts communities. Through the NING*NING Solar Project, we hope to contribute to an energy future that is both sustainable and empowering.”
Also present was Ms Katerielle Joy Cedeño, Energy Regulation Officer II of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), representing Chairman Francis Saturnino Juan.
SolX Technologies: A partnership made possible by Ateneo-grown innovation
The collaboration between Ateneo and JNEC was made possible through SolX Technologies Inc., the first digital energy solutions company in the Philippines offering end-to-end energy management services—from assessment and brokerage to optimization.
Founded by Ateneo alumni Sergius Santos (CEO) and Matt Tan (COO), SolX began as a startup within the Ateneo ecosystem and has grown into a leading innovator in digital energy solutions. Its platform leverages data, technology, and analytics to help organizations transition to sustainable power efficiently and responsibly.
A model for collaboration and nation-building
By transitioning all of its campuses to renewable energy sources five years ahead of schedule, Ateneo de Manila sets a strong example for academic institutions nationwide.
The University hopes that this partnership with JNEC, supported by SolX, will become a model for how industry, innovation, and education can come together to achieve a more sustainable and equitable energy future.
