From cult experiment to award-winning phenomenon: Si Faust (After Goethe) at the 38th Aliw Awards
19 Dec 2025
What began as a long-simmering idea in the mind of Wolfgang frontman Basti Artadi evolved into one of the most acclaimed theater productions of 2025.

Si Faust (After Goethe) — co-created by Artadi and director Nelsito Gomez, and produced and staged by Areté at the Doreen Black Box Theater — culminated its remarkable run with a major win at the 38th Aliw Awards on 15 December 2025, receiving the Breakthrough Performer/Performance Award.
The production reimagines Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust through the music of Filipino rock band Wolfgang, presented as a sung-through rock opera. Drawing inspiration from German expressionism and F W Murnau’s 1926 silent film Faust, the show embraces bold physicality, stark imagery, and an immersive soundscape. Set in a plague-ravaged Philippine province, the story follows a disillusioned preacher who makes a desperate bargain with the devil.
Critics praised the show’s artistic coherence and dynamic staging. Joseton Vergel de Dios delivered a vulnerable and compelling Faust, while Maita Ponce’s Mephistopheles emerged as a commanding and electrifying presence. Shaira Opsimar anchored the musical emotionally as Marga, earning acclaim for her vocal power and depth.
Wolfgang’s music, under Kabaitan Bautista’s direction and sound design, became a sweeping, operatic wall of sound, supported by Resident Technical Director D Cortezano and his team, and guided by Artistic Director Dr Jerry C Respeto, whose vision positions Areté as a hub for bold, interdisciplinary theater.
Despite a short, sold-out run, Si Faust became a word-of-mouth sensation, prompting calls for a larger venue and future restagings. Its Aliw Awards win recognizes not only the creative risks of its artists, but also Areté’s vital role in fostering innovative Filipino theater, where music, literature, and performance collide as a disruptive force.
