24 Feb 2026 | Jace Navarro
Since 1978, Ateneo de Manila University has been honoring its employees with the University Service Awards, recognizing their dedication and commitment to the University’s mission.
Now in its 48th year, the University Service Awards continue to celebrate employees from all units whose service contributes to the growth and strength of the Ateneo community.
We’re excited to introduce some of this year’s awardees, who will share their stories, favorite places on campus, and reasons for staying at Ateneo.
This is Ferdinand, a thirtieth-year service awardee from Ateneo Senior High School.
Why Ateneo?
Ateneo is home. I have been here since I was 8 years old. Much as I have my parents to be thankful for toiling to have me and my siblings study in this school, what and how I am today I owe to people who have come into my life all throughout my growing years in this campus. Both teachers and non-teaching personnel, and of course the Jesuits have all influenced and shaped the very fabric of my being. I look back to my basic education teachers and my Jesuit professors. Directly or indirectly, they have mentored me and, together with my father and mother, have been instruments towards laying the very foundation of my faith.
It is Ateneo that has been God's medium to make me know and feel blessed, gifted, forgiven, and loved by Him through the very people I have grown with in this community.
Having received so much, how can one not be grateful and choose to give back?
What keeps you going?
Having been here all these years does not mean that it's always a bed of roses. It's had its hardships and challenges, especially these last 10 years. But I am always reminded of the words of dear Jesuits who in one way or another had told me, "If you are doing God's work, if you are being God's instrument, why would He not take care of you and your loved ones?"
That thought always stuck with me. That thought I always try to anchor to.
Favorite memory at work
None in particular, but it is for every moment that I hope I was able to be an instrument of God to others, particularly towards students and parents I come across and interact with especially in times of their own trials and tribulation. It is during class sessions when I somehow just know that I managed to get through to students and leave them with something to ponder and think about that I gain a sense of purpose.
Favorite spot on campus
Favorite spot? I would say that our chapels always have a place in my heart. Be it the Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angels, the Kostka Chapel, the College Chapel, The Gesu, and our Gonzaga Chapel have at different points in my life provided me solace and a sense of peace.
Most important lesson you’ve learned?
"Keep a grateful heart and surrender to God... THY WILL BE DONE."
