Since 1978, Ateneo de Manila University has been honoring its employees with the University Service Awards, recognizing their dedication and commitment to the University’s mission.

Now in its 48th year, the University Service Awards continue to celebrate employees from all units whose service contributes to the growth and strength of the Ateneo community.

We’re excited to introduce some of this year’s awardees, who will share their stories, favorite places on campus, and reasons for staying at Ateneo.

This is Tirso, a 30-year Service Awardee from the Central Facilities Management Office.

For three decades, he has served the University with dedication and excellence. He is also part of the Staff Awards Excellence Hall of Fame, recognizing his outstanding service and commitment.

Why Ateneo?
At first, I chose Ateneo because of the opportunities the job could offer. However, after working here for some time, I realized that Ateneo had become a significant part of my life. Throughout my journey across different parts of the campus—through numerous gatherings, events, and even ordinary days—and through the many people I have met, I have learned so much. I have experienced both good and challenging days. Along the way, I have learned to embrace, live out, and share its rich culture and values. Now, its mission has become part of my own mission as well.

What keeps you going?
What has kept me going throughout the years is my passion for my work and my desire to overcome the obstacles I face in order to learn and grow as a person. I believe that we should never stop learning, because there is joy in discovering new things about the world and in testing our limits. Most importantly, it is my family who inspires me to keep going despite difficult circumstances. They are my strength and comfort during challenging times.

Favorite memory at work
The jobs that I’ve taken ever since I started have involved going to and from different places within the campus. In those short travel times, what I loved the most was walking under the moving shadows of the trees. Aside from the relaxing space it could provide, it has also helped me appreciate the beauty and tranquility that the world has and provides.

Favorite spot on campus
As can be gleaned from my favorite memory on campus, my favorite spots are the green areas—especially the tranquil, forested spaces. They help me take a step back from the hustle and bustle of work and allow my mind to be still.

Most important lesson you’ve learned?
After many years in this world, I have come to appreciate the good people in our lives. Aside from the comfort and warmth they bring, they also help ease our worries. Though they can sometimes be difficult to find, especially in unfamiliar places, I have learned that it is important to seek them out, cherish them, and stay connected with them. One’s journey in life becomes even more meaningful when surrounded by people who support and encourage you.
