Ateneo strengthens social sustainability through training and capacity-building initiatives

Ateneo de Manila University continues to advance social sustainability and community resilience through training programs that equip students and stakeholders with practical knowledge on sustainability, climate resilience, and disaster preparedness. Several initiatives led by the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability (AIS) highlight the university’s commitment to sustainability education and leadership development.
Sustainability Education for Students
2 April 2025
AIS, in partnership with the Council of Organizations in the Ateneo–Manila (COA-M), conducted the Sustainability Essentials Workshop at Heyden Hall, Manila Observatory.
The workshop introduced students from the John Gokongwei School of Management, School of Science and Engineering, and the School of Social Sciences to sustainability concepts and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sessions covered sustainability frameworks such as the circular economy and life-cycle analysis, along with interactive activities encouraging students to translate sustainability principles into everyday practice.

Systems Thinking Workshops for Climate Resilience
13–14 May and 29–30 May 2025
AIS also hosted systems thinking workshops for resilience planning on 13–14 May and 29–30 May 2025 at the Manila Observatory.
Participants from government, private sector, academia, and civil society learned how to apply systems thinking to climate and resilience planning using the City Resilience Toolkit (CResT). Activities included stakeholder mapping, scenario planning, and the use of causal loop diagrams to understand complex sustainability challenges.

Disaster Preparedness Training for ROTC Cadets
November 2025
Basic cadets of the Ateneo NSTP-ROTC completed a disaster preparedness training program led by the AIS Climate and Disaster Resilience (CDR) team.
The program focused on disaster literacy, hazard mapping, and emergency response, including the use of digital hazard tools such as HazardHunterPH and Project NOAH. Cadets also conducted field activities identifying safe zones and risk areas on campus and received an orientation on the university’s Campus Emergency Management Plan.
