Sintang Dalisay: A timeless tragedy of love reimagined

After a highly acclaimed return to the stage last year, Tanghalang Ateneo is giving theatergoers the opportunity to revel once again in Sintang Dalisay - a breathtaking adaptation of forbidden love elevated by the elements of Igal dance and kulintang music seamlessly integrated into its narrative. Originally directed by the late Dr. Ricardo Abad in 2011 and co-directed by Filipino playwright, Guelan Valera-Luarca, performances will take centerstage at the Hyundai Theatre in Areté, Ateneo de Manila University, from February 14 to February 16, 2025 with both matinee and evening showings available for all audiences to enjoy.

Honored with accolades for Best Production and Best Director at the 2012 Aliw Awards for its powerful interpretation, Sintang Dalisay is set in the fictional Mindanaoan community of Sempurna at the heart of which lies the ongoing feud between the Mustapha and Kalimuddin families. It is here where the poignant interactions between Rashiddin and Jamila prove that even within the confines of animosity, seeds of love and hope can grow to break through those walls.

The exploration of themes is abundant - from familial loyalty to the devastating consequences of violence and prejudice, audiences will be taken through an emotional journey that is only magnified in the manner in which it is delivered. Each performance demands an incredible feat from its artists who require more than just the ability to embody their characters but to simultaneously move in the precision and rhythmic timing of the traditional Igal dance form. Emphasizing intricate hand and finger movements with choreography having been inspired by the Sama-Bajau natives from the Southern Philippines, the visual artistry served is unparalleled from the expressive motion of each character to the sound, stage design, and costumes. If there was ever a purer representation of Filipino culture and talent in the performing arts industry, Sintang Dalisay exemplifies this in every detail.
