Breaking barriers: PWD graduate students benefit from Ateneo’s tuition scholarship
08 Sep 2025
For many graduate students with disabilities, pursuing higher education is both a dream and a challenge. In recognition of this, Ateneo de Manila University launched the 20% Tuition Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), a program designed to make advanced learning more accessible.
Opening Doors to Graduate Education
Since its introduction in September 2022, the scholarship has provided much-needed support to 12 graduate students, easing financial barriers while affirming that disability should never stand in the way of academic aspirations.
Most scholars balance their studies with other commitments, often enrolling part-time at an average of six units per semester. This flexibility has allowed them to continue their professional work, care for their families, or manage health conditions—all while pursuing graduate degrees that expand their opportunities.
Stories from Across the Country
The program has reached students from urban centers like Manila, Quezon City, and Makati, as well as communities in Antipolo, Southern Leyte, and San Mateo. Each scholar carries a unique story—whether it’s the resilience of a working professional with a hearing impairment, the perseverance of a student with orthopedic challenges, or the determination of a learner with visual impairment to complete a master’s degree.
Scholars believe that the tuition discount was not just financial assistance, but a recognition of the person’s worth. For many, the scholarship symbolizes more than tuition relief—it is a statement of a right to quality education.
