A Tale of Two Narratives

New release from the Ateneo Press, A Tale of Two Narratives, spotlights the life and music of a revered T’boli epic singer

Indigenous voices deserve to be heard and appreciated. A new release from the Ateneo University Press, A Tale of Two Narratives: Mendung Sabal, a Life in Words and Song by Manolete Mora, showcases the life and music of T’boli epic singer Mendung Sabal, whose storytelling abilities have greatly transformed and preserved her people’s oral traditions.

Manolete Mora puts the spotlight on Mendung Sabal and presents her to us as a cultural treasure not only to the T’boli community but to the Filipino nation as a whole. The book discerns that Mendung’s distinctive and brilliant rendition of the T’boli’s Tudbulul epic is strongly nuanced by her personal stories of sorrows, struggles, and tenacious responses against adversity. A Tale of Two Narratives also offers detailed and vibrant biographical information, musical analyses, and discussions of the sociocultural realities of the community. Artistic expression is deemed transformative and powerful as it serves as a conduit to the agency of T’boli women as they grapple with the complex and contextual consequences of patriarchy, capitalism, and modernization.

The book hopes to instill within readers a sense of appreciation for the creative pursuits of the T’boli and other Indigenous peoples across the globe. Their narratives provide varied ways of seeing and understanding life and the world around us. A Tale of Two Narratives will be an enriching read for those interested in learning more about the unique artistry of the T’boli people through the voice of one of its most revered storytellers.

A Tale of Two Narratives: Mendung Sabal, a Life in Words and Song by Manolete Mora is available at the Ateneo de Manila University Press book shop in Bellarmine Hall and the press’s official website, Lazada, and Shopee stores.
