I. Description
The Ateneo School Government (ASOG) is the public-sector arm of the Ateneo de Manila University. The School’s long-term mission is to teach and work with effective and ethical public servants. It aims to contribute to building prosperous, sustainable, just, and happy communities in the Philippines, empowered by democratic, participatory, transparent, and accountable governance institutions and processes.
As a graduate school for leadership and public service, ASOG’s academic and executive education programs bridge the gap between classroom wisdom and real-world policy decision-making and governance. Through its research and extension programs and its work with public, private, and community organizations, ASOG continues to develop and foster innovative ideas and approaches in areas such as leadership, poverty eradication, climate change, social accountability, and politics.
II. Scope of Work
The Research Assistant III (Security Governance) will be part of the project team, expected to provide research and general support in line with the research agenda and thematic areas of the Security Governance Program, which includes national security, emerging technologies in defense, and security sector governance.
In particular, the Research Assistant III (Security Governance) is expected to:
- Provide assistance in the development of research outputs such as policy briefs, briefing notes, presentations, empirical papers, and other research outputs, specifically by conducting reviews and analyses of literature, data gathering (may include development of research instruments; conduct of field interviews, surveys, FGDs; review of literature, etc), as well as data analysis and write-up;
- Collaborate in the planning, design, and take the lead in organizing administrative and logistical requirements for academic events initiated by the Dean or Center Head. This responsibility encompasses conferences, seminars, and research colloquia, among others, ensuring smooth operations and successful outcomes;
- Spearhead the development and upkeep of databases, aiming to expand networks and enhance connectivity. This includes maintaining databases of partners, conferences, and experts, enabling efficient access to valuable resources;
- Take the lead in completing reports, along with other administrative and financial documents as necessary for effective project implementation. This involves ensuring accurate and timely submission of required documentation;
- Assist the Program Manager in establishing and maintaining effective communication and collaboration with partners and stakeholders involved in the program. This role includes fostering positive relationships and facilitating productive exchanges of information and resources; and
- Perform such other functions as may be assigned by the Dean, the Ateneo Policy Center Head and his/her authorized representative similar to, and related to the functions enumerated above.
III. Description of Education, Competence, and Required Experience
Applicants for the Ateneo Policy Center - Research Assistant III (Security Governance) position must have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in any social science, with above average academic performance; masteral units are an advantage;
- Strong analytical skills and appreciation of development;
- Strong writing skills, with the ability to synthesize complex policy issues, and produce clear, well-structured reports and policy recommendations;
- Thematic familiarity with national security and the security sector;
- Graphics presentation skills is an advantage;
- Excellent English communication skills, oral and written;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a team
