Fr Roque J Ferriols SJ, 1924–2021 (Memo U2122-012)

With deep sadness, we inform the University community of the passing away of Fr Roque J Ferriols SJ early this morning, 15 August 2021, on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary and one day shy of his 97^th birthday.

One of Ateneo de Manila’s cultural icons who has left an indelible mark on the lives of generations of Ateneans, Padre Roque taught Philosophy for over 40 years, established the university’s AB Philosophy degree program, and pioneered the teaching of Philosophy in Filipino. Among his published books are Magpakatao: Ilang Babasahing Pilosopiko (1979), Pambungad sa Metapisika (1991), and Pilosopiya ng Relihiyon (2014).

Padre Roque entered the Society on 30 May 1941 and was ordained a priest on 19 June 1954. In honor of his 80^thyear as a Jesuit last May 2021, the Fr Roque Ferriols SJ Suscipe Fund for the care of senior and infirm Jesuits was created under the Philippine Jesuit Aid Association. Donations in gratitude for Padre Roque’s life and mission are welcome.
