On 20 July 2025, the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law marked a significant milestone with the celebration of its 79th Annual Commencement Exercises, honoring the hard work and dedication of the Class of 2025. The Commencement Program was held on Sunday, July 20, at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
In her address to formally open the commencement program, Dr Maria Luz C Vilches, Vice President for Higher Education, reminded the graduates of the responsibility and purpose that accompany their legal training.
Mr. Enrico Gabriel R. Paguia, the Class Valedictorian, offered a speech emphasizing community, humility, and kindness. “Kindness is not a weakness. It's a deliberate, often difficult, but always powerful choice to extend yourself for others,” he said, reflecting on how the shared challenges of law school brought the class closer together.
Dean Jose Maria G Hofileña introduced the Commencement Speaker, Hon Hans Leo J Cacdac, Secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers and alumnus of the Ateneo Law School. In a moving address, Secretary Cacdac urged graduates to anchor their legal careers on empathy, compassion, and integrity. He recounted his experiences in migrant protection and public service, sharing stories that illustrated the profound impact of lawyers who lead with heart. “Empathy and compassion are transcendent. Truly caring for your clients begins with understanding them deeply,” he emphasized.
The ceremony proceeded with the conferral of degrees, led by Fr Yap SJ, followed by the awarding of diplomas and academic honors. The Pledge of Honor of the Graduates was led by Atty Jose Martin R. Tensuan, President of the Ateneo de Manila Law Alumni Association.
In his final address and benediction, Fr Yap SJ encouraged the graduates to remain hopeful and grounded in faith, especially in these complex times. Quoting Pope Francis and the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, he reminded them that their journey was not just about earning a degree, but about becoming “men and women for others.”
With the Alma Mater Hymn, A Song for Mary, resounding through the Irwin Theater, the Class of 2025 concluded their journey at Ateneo Law, ready to serve with competence, conscience, and compassion.
Congratulations, Ateneo Law Class of 2025! One big fight!
