26 Aug 2025
On Wednesday, 20 August 2025, Ateneo de Manila's Gokongwei Brothers School of Education and Learning Design (GBSEALD) hosted the launch of the Jesuit Education issue of the Windhover: The Philippine Jesuit Magazine at the JJ Atencio Lighthouse for New Learning in Areté Ateneo.
This issue showcased stories of various educators teaching in Jesuit schools around the country in their mission to prepare learners to lead and transform society for the greater good.. It explores futures thinking, collaborative online international learning, educational leadership programs from the point of view of participants, and reflections of Jesuit educators.
The event was opened by Fr Johnny Go SJ, EdD, Dean of GBSEALD, who explained why they were hosting a launch for this particular issue.
According to Fr Go, the reason for the launch was "to shine a light on the people who've been working behind the scenes for the Windhover all these years."
He specifically mentioned Ines Bautista-Yao, Editor-in-Chief, and Bro Bien Cruz, Managing Editor, while also acknowledging the "whole village" that works to produce the magazine.
In addition, he also thanked them for dedicating an entire issue to Jesuit Education.
"We're also very grateful to the Windhover editorial staff for shining a light on the Jesuit ministry of education, because it's not very popular these days," Fr Go stated. "There's a certain allergy to institution, because people want to be free, to keep their options open."
"But I believe that the educational institutions of the Society of Jesus are really a great opportunity for us to touch the lives of people," he continued. "We're with students all the way, from their grade school days all the way to their university days."
In addition to Fr Go, two of the featured authors in the issue spoke about the articles they wrote.
Dr Priscilla Angela T Cruz spoke about her article on her experiences as a mentor in the Ignatian Leadership in Education Program (ILEP). This included the challenges of having to do this in the middle of lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the equally challenging prospect of having to resume the program offline.
Ms Adeva Jane E Kalidas, MAEd, discussed her article about Jesuit Education in Mindanao. As part of this, she touched upon how the common misconceptions about Mindanao provide their own set of challenges.
Additionally, she also reflected on the challenges faced by educators in the various Jesuit schools in the region due to its political realities, and offered her hopes for the future of education in Mindanao.
Following their respective lecture, both Dr Cruz and Ms Kalidas engaged in short discussions with the assembled crowd. This was followed by a short merienda at the GBSEALD offices.
