AIS hosts nature-based solution expert Dr Erich Wolff
09 Dec 2025
Last 24 to 25 November 2025, the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability (AIS) hosted Dr Erich Wolff, a nature-based solutions (Nbs) expert from Utrecht University. To conclude his short visit, he delivered a talk entitled “Nature-based solutions and citizen science for flood management” in Heyden Hall, Manila Observatory.
In his talk, Dr Wolff dissected the nuances of the term “nature-based solutions” and argued how many misuse the term. He highlighted the necessity of having both natural or ecological and social benefits before an initiative is deemed to be an Nbs. He then presented case studies on Nbs that worked in various contexts, including Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, and Brazil, and examined how deliberate design and proper science contribute to their success.
He also presented snippets of NATURA Global Roadmap for Urban Nature-based Solutions, which he co-wrote with 79 other global experts. The Asia and Oceania reports of the Roadmap were launched in Manila later that week.
After which, he discussed the role of citizen science in advancing data monitoring for data-poor contexts, such as in Indonesia and Fiji. He shared his experience in engaging with local community leaders and local governments in improving data collection on floor monitoring and climate change adaptation. He shared how citizen science can be a tool to decentralise decision-making and to engage non-scientists in knowledge production.
Dr Wolff ended by sharing his thoughts on how Nbs and citizen science can be employed in the Philippines particularly for flood management. His talk was followed by a discussion on opportunities for collaboration among members of the Ateneo de Manila community from different departments, units, and campuses.
Aside from delivering a talk, the itinerary of Dr Wolff included a sitdown meeting to discuss potential partnerships with AIS, a sustainability walk of the campus in which he provided recommendations on upscaling Nbs, and an immersion to cultural spots and green spaces in Manila.
