Congratulations, Professor Emeritus Emma Estenzo Porio, 21st Manuel L Quezon Gawad Parangal Awardee

The Manuel L Quezon Gawad Parangal Award stands as the highest form of recognition given by the Quezon City government to outstanding individuals and institutions with "remarkable contributions and achievements that bring honor not only to themselves but also the city and the country."

Professor Porio, who served as chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology for nearly a decade, made significant mark in the fields of scholarship, mentorship, and practice. She helped lead national endeavours in mobilizing scientific expertise, government engagement, and sectoral actions in forging a "climate-resilient and climate smart-Philippines" as co-chair of the National Panel of Technical Experts of the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines. Furthermore, Dr Porio has taken leadership on climate change research and action as Co-chair International Climate Change Council Network, Adaptation Work Stream.

As a project leader and principal investigator of Coastal Cities At Risk - Philippines (CCARPH), Dr Porio worked with scientists, government executives, and citizens in inventing climate disaster-resilient tools. With the transdisciplinary lens of CCARPH,  Dr Porio engaged city-community leaders in establishing City Resiliency Cards to fortify their respective capacities in handling super typhoons, earthquakes, and other risks.  Her extensive work in climate change research resulted in co-production of actionable science for climate action with stakeholders and communities of practice at local-global space

The Manuel L. Quezon recognition will be handed over to the awardees during the MLQ Gawad Parangal Awards night on 25th October 2023 at the PETA Theatre in New Manila, Quezon City.

Congratulations, Professor Porio for the 2023 Manuel L Quezon Gawad Parangal Award.
