ACSEnt, SEDPI partner on teaching social entrepreneurship to Mindanao educators

02 Dec 2022

The Ateneo Center for Social Entrepreneurship (ACSEnt) and the Social Enterprise Development Partnership Inc. (SEDPI) have collaborated on a series of workshops called the Fundamentals of Social Entrepreneurship.  The workshop series culminated with an in-person session onsite at the Northwestern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology (NMSC) in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental. This was attended by faculty members from NMSC and other universities like the University of Southern Mindanao and Davao de Oro State College.

This workshop series aims to discuss theories and concepts of social entrepreneurship; and how social entrepreneurship contributes to sustainable development. It helps to identify challenges and rewards in building social enterprises; and see how management tools and processes solve social and environmental problems. In particular, it offers faculty members guidance and tips on how to teach the concept of social entrepreneurship to their students through case method teaching which will hopefully generate ideas from faculty member participants that can create a space for the teaching of social entrepreneurship in their respective universities.

The casebook entitled Creating Sustainable Value in Social Enterprises: Stories of Social Innovation was used for this workshop series.  The cases in the book reflect social enterprises based in the Philippines specifically those that are founded by Ateneo graduates.

In a short speech by NMSC President, Dr. Herbert Glen Reyes at the beginning of the program, he mentioned how the teaching of social entrepreneurship can make a big difference in the extension program of their university.  He believes that this program should be supported and promoted to the other Mindanao universities most especially in established networks like the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools.

The ACSEnt – SEDPI partnership envisions to teach social entrepreneurship widely in universities beginning with the contacts established in Mindanao.
The workshop was facilitated by Ana Tan from ACSEnt, Dr. Achoot Cuyegekeng from GBSEALD and Vince Rapisura and Edwin Salonga from SEDPI. Ana and Achoot along with Raquel Olpoc are co-editors and co-authors of the casebook Creating Sustainable Value in Social Enterprises: Stories of Social Innovation while Vince and Edwin are the co-founders of SEPDI as well as part time faculty members of JGSOM.
This workshop was made possible by support from Accenture Foundation.
