ASHS Grade 11 researchers bag bronze at SEAMEO Young Scientists Congress in Malaysia

Representing Ateneo de Manila Senior High School (ASHS) and the Philippines, a team of 11-Wright students bagged the bronze medal for Outstanding Award for Presentation in the 13th Regional Congress Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists (SSYS) on 14 June 2024 in Malaysia. Dani Santos, Matt Albuquerque, Leigh Amante, Leaf Apsay, Arianne Co, Amber Luneau, Gab Repe, and Adrian Te won for their study, “Evaluating Tullahan River's Water Quality: Exploring Physicochemical Characteristics and the Presence of 𝘌𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪 (𝘌. 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪).” They were accompanied in Malaysia by ASHS faculty Tin Santiago and research adviser Gabe Eslava.

Also in Malaysia were a team of students from 11-Tsuji who presented their study, “Analysis and Comparison of Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) to Other Grass Genera for Landslide Mitigation and Sustainable Erosion Control.” The team composed of Aless Bajarias, Rosanne Diaz, Hans de Asis, Rosanne Diaz, Hans de Asis, Celine Chua, Fernando Dela Cruz, Shannen Lupenna, Raphael Reyes, and Sharize Tañada qualified and presented at the congress.

Hosted by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), the SSYS is an annual research congress that attracts participants from all over Southeast Asia. This year, students from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam gathered for the competition at SEAMEO's Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM), a premier center for science and mathematics. The Congress aims to provide young scientists with a platform to present research projects that integrate STEM concepts with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that promote initiatives for a healthier and brighter future for humanity and the environment.
