40 Days of Lent: Day 11

40 Days of Lent: Day 11

Names are important. They carry our identity. They may reflect where we come from. And they can give us some anchor. The process of naming can also be significant. To give a name is to make some connection. It is to offer or define a character both for the one being named and the one giving the name. And it is to allow a glimpse into history or even future paths that may be taken.

There are no rules or guidelines to names and to naming, even when it comes to our Origin. Names can be made very unique, they can be used to depict anything we desire or feel, they can reflect what is personal to us. So, what names do you have for God? How do you call Jesus? What do these tell you about your relationship with the Lord?

In this time of Lent when we are being invited to feel and recognize God’s presence more, perhaps we can begin by looking at this very fundamental aspect of our faith and journey: the name, and therefore feelings and beliefs, that we associate with the One who called and named us first. As we do this, may we also take the time to listen and relish how our Home has entitled us and regarded us: cherished, worthy, important, beloved.
