Grade 5 students encounter Reel and Real Heroes in Field Trip
20 Dec 2023 | Maureen S Maralit
7 December 2023 marked the comeback of the field trip for the Grade 5 students of the Ateneo de Manila Grade School after years of virtual learning. Accompanied by a team composed of faculty, administrators, parents and medical personnel, the boys were visibly excited as they explored and enjoyed each venue they visited.
Part of the itinerary was the visit to the Philippine Veterans Museum in Taguig City. It is a historical museum that tells the story of the heroic deeds of our Filipino World War II veterans through photographs, memorabilia and artifacts. Visiting the museum was a great opportunity for the students- whom we consider the “hope of the nation”- to be aware of the courage and sacrifices of their “lolos” and “lolas” to secure our country’s freedom. These Filipino warriors were the last to give up during the war, and were considered by Winston Churchill to be the best warriors in the world.

It is our hope that our youth will never forget these real heroes while they follow the exploits of reel heroes like Superman and Batman.
And speaking of the DC heroes, it was also a treat for the boys to visit the Omniverse Museum in Makati City. The museum is a private collection of life-sized pop culture items depicting comic book and movie characters.

The museum is for eager kids and curious adults as well. The boys were in awe as they entered each station. One room featured the galactic world of Star Wars, while others showcased the fantasy adventures of Game of Thrones and Harry Potter. The toys displayed, however, are not only for mere entertainment but are also tools to educate and ignite the students’ imagination. Most of the movies showcased in the museum are inspired by Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Indeed, the field trip truly delivered on its promise to provide our young Ateneans with a rich and varied learning experience.
