22 Nov 2024

Last school year, Ateneo de Manila Grade School (AGS) students Ethan Alferez (5-Bagobo), Waki Aringo (6-Regis), and Mika Bagain (3-Mayon) won medal awards in the field of Natural Science in the preliminary round of the Copernicus Olympiad, which was held online on 26 November 2023. Ethan won a gold medal, while Waki and Mika both secured silver medals.

Five weeks later, in January 2024, Mika Bagain flew to the USA to compete in the event’s Global/Final Round, which was held onsite at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. There, Mika won a silver for the Philippines.

AGS medalists in the Copernicus Olympiad for Natural Science 2023-2024

The Copernicus Olympiad was established in 2020 in Houston, Texas, by passionate educators with international experience in education. The name Copernicus is derived from the famous Polish mathematician, physicist, and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who proposed the revolutionary theory that the planets revolve around the Sun, contrary to the then-prevailing belief that Earth was the center of the Universe.

The Copernicus Olympiad offers grades 3 to 12 students from all over the world the opportunity to compete in the following disciplines:

·       Natural Science Olympiad

·       Physics and Astronomy Olympiad

·       Copernicus Film Festival

·       Copernicus Entrepreneurship Olympiad (CEO)

·       Mathematics Olympiad

The Copernicus Olympiad is growing day by day and currently has contestants from more than 50 countries around the globe.
