Contract management training for the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA)

12 Feb 2025

The Ateneo School of Government (ASoG) Executive Education Program recently conducted a customized Contract Management Training for the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) from 4 to 5 February 2025, at their office in Pasay City. This two-day program was specifically tailored to meet the needs of TIEZA’s mid-senior managers, providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage contracts effectively and ensure legal and regulatory compliance.

As TIEZA is involved in numerous contracts across its various operations, it aimed to equip its officers and staff with practical, real-world tools for managing contracts of varying complexities. ASoG through the Executive Education Program, with its extensive experience in providing tailored training, designed the program to meet TIEZA’s specific needs.

Ms Sharon Grace S Yabut, Head of the Executive Education Program, highlighted in her opening remarks that managing contracts is not just a technical requirement — it is a critical enabler of sustainable tourism, infrastructure development, and public service delivery. She added, “Every well-managed contract contributes to efficient project execution, responsible use of public resources, and ultimately, the realization of TIEZA’s mission to develop and manage tourism infrastructure that enhances the country’s global competitiveness.”

The training focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of contract management, risk mitigation, and legal compliance, aiming to improve contract execution and foster transparency in TIEZA’s operations. It was structured around modules on contract lifecycle management, risk identification, legal and regulatory compliance, ethical practices in contracting, and negotiation skills. Participants also engaged in interactive workshops, role play, and case studies, providing them with practical tools to handle real-world contract management challenges.

Atty Danny E Bunyi, a senior partner at DivinaLaw with over 30 years of legal expertise, led the training sessions. Atty Bunyi’s extensive background includes his work in corporate law, banking, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial contract drafting. His experience also includes serving as Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary at the Development Bank of the Philippines, where he gained invaluable insights into contract management. Atty. Bunyi is also a seasoned lecturer where he teaches corporation and partnerships law at the Ateneo de Manila University John Gokongwei School of Management.

The training formally concluded with the awarding of Certificates of Completion to the participants. Ms Sheena C Borromeo, Manager of Human Resource Services Division of TIEZA, reiterated in her closing message the importance of applying the knowledge gained from the training in their professional roles. In a recorded message, Dr Philip Arnold P Tuaño, Dean of the Ateneo School of Government, commended the participants for their commitment to enhancing their contract management capabilities. Dr Tuaño emphasized that good governance requires transparency, accountability, and the ability to mitigate risks and through honing their skills in contract management, they are directly contributing to these values.
