AGS | Solemnity of Saint Ignatius of Loyola
28 Jul 2025 | John Jeffrey T Velasco
On 31 July, we celebrate Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Priest and Founder of the Society of Jesus, as a Solemnity in union with the Jesuits and as a Memorial in union with the Universal Church. The former soldier-turned-holy man continues to inspire many people today with his life story and spiritual insights. The group of priests and brothers he founded, the Society of Jesus, remains the largest order of religious men in the world today. Many other religious orders inspired by him and the Jesuits were founded throughout the centuries. Ateneo de Manila exists today because of the Jesuits and because of Saint Ignatius.
In his autobiography, Saint Ignatius of Loyola referred to himself as ‘the pilgrim’. He considered his life a journey of transformation from being an earthly soldier to God’s servant. After a cannonball shattered his legs and his dreams of worldly glory, he read books about the life of Christ and the lives of the Saints, which inspired him to go on his pilgrimage towards God. His journey led him to Montserrat, where he left his old life and his sword; to Jerusalem, where the Lord walked; to Manresa, where God enlightened him; to Paris, where he gained education and friends who would become the first Jesuits; and to Rome, where he would establish the Society of Jesus. Ultimately, he reached his destination - heaven, where he intercedes for us in the company of God, whose love he preached.
As we celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, let us turn to him in prayer for guidance during our pilgrimage here on earth. May we never lose hope in the God who loved us first, for hope does not disappoint. As we journey through this Jubilee Year, may Saint Ignatius, the faithful pilgrim, walk with us every step of the way.
