Solemnity of Saint Ignatius of Loyola: A pilgrimage of hope and mission
31 Jul 2025
On 30 July 2025, the Ateneo de Manila Grade School community gathered in a prayerful celebration of the Solemnity of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus and spiritual father to all Ateneans. The Mass, held at the AGS Covered Courts, was presided over by Fr Roberto Yap SJ, University President; Fr Jose Mari "Jonjee" Sumpaico SJ, Vice President for Basic Education; Fr Victor De Jesus SJ, AGS Chaplain; and Fr Norberto "Kit" Bautista SJ, AGS Assistant Chaplain and Rector of the University Church of the Gesu, who delivered a homily filled with deep reflection and inspiration.
In this Jubilee Year, the celebration was centered on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” echoing St. Ignatius’ own journey—from his surrender at Montserrat to his transformation and lifelong commitment to follow Christ wherever He led. The Call to Worship invited all present to walk in faith and courage, just as Ignatius did, letting go of what holds us back and allowing God's love to transform us for mission.
In his homily, Fr. Kit emphasized the enduring influence of St. Ignatius in the life of every Atenean. He reminded us that Ignatius is not merely a historic figure of the past, but a living presence who continues to shape our way of proceeding.
The Mass also included a special blessing of students and the commissioning of administrators, faculty, and staff. The Headmaster and his Council, alongside all educators and personnel, offered prayers at the altar—asking for the grace to guide, teach, and serve the students entrusted to their care. New teachers and staff were welcomed through a prayer of commitment.
As part of the celebration, the Jubilee Mission Cross was distributed to coordinators, symbolizing Christ's presence in their work and His call to bring light into the world. A deeply moving moment occurred as students stood in silent prayer over their teachers, expressing mutual blessing and a shared sense of mission.
The celebration affirmed what it means to be a community rooted in Ignatian spirituality—to go forth as persons for others, filled with hope, and united in the mission of forming minds, hearts, and spirits for the greater glory of God.
Mr Robles also delivered a message of gratitude to those who prepared the Mass, welcomed the new students, and reminded everyone to continue being people of hope.
