Policy on Green Purchasing (Memo U2324-040)

08 Sep 2023 | Office of the President

Memo # U2324-040
8 September 2023

TO:

The University Community

SUBJECT:

Policy on Green Purchasing

Ateneo de Manila University is steadfast in its commitment to becoming a Laudato Si’ University, fully embracing the principles of integral ecology in all facets of teaching, research, and service as an academic institution. One of the fundamental objectives within this aspiration is to attain CO2 neutrality by the targeted year of 2030.

In consultation with the members of the Laudato Si' Working Group, the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability, the Central Purchasing Office, and OVPFT, we would like to establish this policy of making conscious purchasing decisions, thereby collectively minimizing our environmental impact and fostering a greener campus for future generations.

To ensure meaningful progress towards this goal, we must take significant steps to promote sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12) and environmentally-responsible economics (LSG3) across all operations.

Sustainable Options:

  • As part of our commitment to sustainability, we prioritize procuring products that meet environmental standards, are resource- and energy-efficient, minimize wastage and have a reduced carbon footprint.
  • To reduce waste generation, we are promoting the principles of the circular economy through:  Preference for products with a longer life cycle, products that are easier to repair, recycled products, and products with minimal and sustainable packaging.
  • We are adopting energy-saving technologies and actively seeking energy-efficient appliances and equipment to lower our energy consumption.
  • Ethical sourcing is a crucial consideration in all our procurement decisions, and we are prioritizing suppliers who adhere to ethical practices and uphold social and environmental standards. As much as possible, we will also prioritize goods and services that are locally produced. By purchasing products or availing of services that are as near as possible to the University, we minimize the environmental impacts of transportation and promote the local economy.
  • We seek partnerships with suppliers and manufacturers who share our values.

The Central Purchasing Office (CPO) will prepare the timetable and guidelines to implement Green Purchasing, aligning these with Ateneo’s commitment to the broader sustainability goals as well as to the Laudato Si’ goals.

The success of this policy relies on the collective efforts of the entire university community, and we call upon all faculty, administrators, staff, and students to support sustainable practices and make eco-friendly choices in their respective areas.
