Carbon emissions: A look at Ateneo de Manila University's GHG emissions

The recent data release on Ateneo de Manila University's total Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions for the 2022-2023 reporting year sheds light on the direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the University's operations and energy consumption. Ateneo de Manila University is known for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, and these figures demonstrate the institution's efforts to monitor and mitigate its environmental impact at the source.

According to the latest data, the University reported 19.57 tCO2e tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) for Scope 1 emissions during the 2021-2022 period and 63.41 tCO2e for the 2022-2023 period. These figures encompass direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the institution, such as on-site combustion of fossil fuels for heating, cooling, and transportation purposes.

The University also reported 2,395.41 tCO2e for Scope 2 emissions during the 2021-2022 period and 6,420.79 tCO2e in 2022-2023. Scope 2 emissions cover indirect emissions associated with generating purchased electricity, heat, or steam the institution consumes.

These statistics emphasize the importance of assessing overall sustainability efforts by considering both direct and indirect emissions and the environmental footprint of purchased energy sources.

Although Ateneo de Manila currently does not measure Scope 3 emissions, which encompass indirect emissions from sources not owned or controlled by the institution, it has outlined plans to do so by 2026. Currently, the University is also in the process of hiring a greenhouse gas officer who will more rigorously monitor and report the university’s carbon emissions and performance toward carbon neutrality by 2023.
