Last February 19-21, 2019, Dr. Ronald Mendoza, Dean of the Ateneo School of Government (ASoG), and Ariza Francisco, Ateneo Policy Center researcher, attended the Economics of Tobacco Control Initiative Workshop co-organized by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in London, United Kingdom. The workshop gathered participants spanning 20 countries worldwide funded by IDRC to produce policy-relevant research on tobacco control.
ASoG, as one of the grantees, presented their project titled “Improving Tobacco Taxation Implementation in Southeast Asia.” The three-year project aims to ensure, firstly, that policy discussions in Southeast Asian countries concerning tobacco tax evasion and illicit tobacco are informed by only the most robust, empirical evidence, and secondly, that new relationships are forged between the tobacco control, tax policy reform, and good governance communities in the region.
The workshop emphasized the importance of deploying robust methodologies, integration of gender analysis and policy engagement in the economics of tobacco control research.
