A delegation from Ateneo School of Government (ASoG) led by its Dean, Dr. Philip Arnold P. Tuaño and PARTICIPATE Project Chief of Party, Dr. Julio C. Tehankee visited the province of Basilan on February 9-11, 2023 to conduct a scoping mission with key stakeholders of the province.
The ASoG delegation met with local government units including Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, Lamitan City Mayor Roderick H. Furigay, Municipality of Maluso Mayor Hanie A. Bud, and representatives from the Provincial Government of Basilan. ASoG met with academic institutions as well including Claret College of Isabela and Basilan State College. The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to Brigadier General Domingo Gobway, Brigade Commander of the 101st Infantry in Isabela City.
The meetings allowed ASoG through its public policy think tank, the Ateneo Policy Center, to introduce its different programs offered to BARMM including the Ateneo Bangsamoro Initiative. In addition, PARTICIPATE, a non-partisan, pro-democracy coalition dedicated to engage and empower the political participation of the Filipino people, explored training, research partnerships, and collaboration with the different stakeholders in Basilan.
The trip also featured visits to cultural and tourism sites including the Bajau Floating School in Brgy. Tampalan, Isabela City; Weaving Community in Brgy Buahan, Lamitan City; Lamitan City Ecological Park; and Malamawi Island.
The visit is part of ASoG’s mission to strengthen its efforts in educating and forming leaders that would advance social transformation, good governance, and political reforms in BARMM.
