SAGE 2nd Alumni Homecoming: A night of camaraderie, reflection, and inspiration

09 Dec 2024

Partnerships for the Goals
SAGE Homecoming

The Samahan ng mga Atenistang Graduate ng Economics and Management Economics (SAGE) held its 2nd Alumni Homecoming on 23 November 2024, at the Singson Hall, Ateneo Grade School, Quezon City. This much-anticipated event brought together alumni from across generations to reconnect, celebrate their shared Ateneo experiences, and reflect on the department’s legacy.

The evening began with a campus tour for early attendees, highlighting the nostalgic charm of Ateneo. This was followed by an anticipated Mass officiated by Fr Ernald Andal (MECo ’98), President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The Mass set a reflective and joyful tone for the gathering.

The program commenced with a warm welcome from SAGE President, Goody Hernandez (Eco '72), whose opening remarks celebrated the camaraderie among alumni and the vibrant future of the alumni association.

A highlight of the evening was the keynote speech written by Manny V Pangilinan (Eco '66), delivered eloquently by his Chief of Staff, Debbie Tan, following an introduction by Noel de la Paz (Eco-H '77). The speech touched on the intersection of economics and real-world challenges, inspiring alumni to think critically about their roles in shaping society.

MVP’s speech, a thoughtful blend of wit, wisdom, and vision, resonated deeply with the audience. He spoke of the balance between nostalgia and forward-thinking, urging everyone to remain grounded in their roots while marching confidently into the future.

As Pangilinan poignantly quoted, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” He reminded the audience that their time at Ateneo had given them the tools to be both visionaries and stewards of the future. “We are stewards of the future,” he reflected. “We have the responsibility to leave a better world for the next generation.” These words struck a chord, tying the theme of the evening to the shared mission of the alumni association: to give back and pave the way for those who come after them.

The evening continued with dinner and lively fellowship, accompanied by music from Alvin Santoyo & Company. The melodies set the perfect backdrop for conversations, laughter, and the rekindling of friendships.

This year’s homecoming was not just a celebration but also a reflection of shared values and a renewed commitment to carry the Ateneo spirit beyond the gates of the university. MVP’s words captured this sentiment perfectly, urging alumni to combine the economist’s vision with the pragmatist’s execution to create meaningful change in society.

Here’s to planting more seeds for the future — till the next one!
