Partnerships for the Goals

In a strategic move to push the boundaries of evidence-based medicine, the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH), the Ateneo Center for Research and Innovation (ACRI), and Maxicare Healthcare Corporation have formally launched a research and data-sharing partnership designed to transform healthcare outcomes and strengthen medical education in the Philippines.

Held at ASMPH last 21 July 2025, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing brought together leaders from both the academic and healthcare sectors to seal a collaborative effort focused on leveraging data for research, policy development, and improved patient care.

Present for the MOU signing were Elizabeth Kristine Gregorio, Maxicare Chief Health Network Management Officer; Dr Art C Libao, MD, EFPPS, Maxicare Chief Medical Director; Dr Cenon Alfonso, Dean of ASMPH; and Dr Bernadette Tanchanco, Director of ACRI. Also present was Dr Norbie Mendoza, AVP for Medical Research and ASMPH alumnus, who helped initiate the collaboration.

Dr Mendoza shared that the partnership reflects a “full-circle moment” for him, with his early research work merging with real-world healthcare operations, and will be a chance to bridge research and practice in ways that directly impact patient outcomes and promote sustainable, value-based care. He also emphasized the urgency of turning patterns such as rising ER visits or unnecessary procedures into actionable insights.

For the academic side, this partnership underscores ASMPH’s dual mission to produce physician-leaders and contribute to meaningful health systems reform. In his opening remarks, Dr Alfonso said: “This is the kind of collaboration that prepares our students for the complexity of modern healthcare and drives real-world impact beyond the classroom.”

With this agreement now in place, all three institutions are poised to build a living, learning laboratory, where data drives innovation, and innovation, in turn, informs how we care for people.
