AIS strengthens sustainability leadership through systems thinking

The Ateneo Institute of Sustainability (AIS) served as one of the Instructors for the 2025 Learn2Lead Sustainability (L2LS) program last 11 October at Ore Central Building, BGC, Taguig City, organized by SustainablePH. The 10-week hybrid, cohort-based program brings together sustainability practitioners to strengthen their understanding of key global and local sustainability concepts, frameworks, and paradigms.
Mr Daniel C Ratilla, Program Head for Climate and Disaster Resilience (CDR), led a session on systems thinking, one of the competencies included in the program. Systems thinking has an important role in sustainability, as it emphasizes viewing current challenges and opportunities from different perspectives and considering system complexity. The lecture discussed how systems behave, how structures shape outcomes, and how feedback loops and behavioral patterns influence long-term change. By grounding in both theory and practice, participants gained a clearer understanding of how variables and connections reinforce or undermine each other.
The session also introduced analytical tools such as the causal loop diagram (CLDs), which allowed participants to map key variables, draw connections, and identify leverage points. This exercise allowed them to contextualize systems thinking within their organizational realities and reflect on uncertainties, blind spots, and even opportunities in the future. It also opened pathways for applying these tools deliberately to create scalable and lasting impact in their work and in their communities.
AIS, through the CDR Program, continues to champion systems thinking across different stakeholders groups to further foster sustainability and resilience.
This engagement marks the second year that AIS has been involved as a trainer in the Learn2Lead Sustainability program.
